Strawberry Moon

Sarah Teaford September 12, 2019

Strawberry Moon

Acrylic on canvas 4'x2'

This is a painting about the strength needed to overcome generational trauma. The strength is in the woman's direct gaze that forces the viewer to confront a violent history. She holds skulls like scales of justice in front of a full moon. The strawberry moon is the full moon that occurs in June, the month that celebrates the emancipation of American slaves. Lilies, a common funeral flower, pour from the skull mouths as a reminder that her ancestors had to fight to mourn their dead. That even in death, racism permeates.
